Bogoso–Prestea Mine Restart: Heath Goldfields Achieves First Gold Pour
The Bogoso-Prestea Mine has officially returned to production. On 19 February 2026, Heath Goldfields Limited announced its first gold pour after 24 months of shutdown. This milestone marks a turning point for the historic Bogoso–Prestea Mine in Ghana.
Under the leadership of Patrick Appiah Mensah, the company has focused on disciplined execution. As a result, the Bogoso-Prestea Mine restart now stands as a model for responsible revival in Ghana’s mining sector.
Operational Progress at Bogoso-Prestea Mine
Since restart activities began, progress has been steady and measurable.
First, the company created over 1,400 direct and indirect jobs. Importantly, 80% of these roles were filled by people from local communities.
In addition, underground water levels were reduced by more than 240 feet. Currently, approximately 10 million litres of water are pumped daily to stabilise operations.
Moreover, the Tailings Storage Facility has been restored to safe operating condition. The Process Plant has also been rehabilitated. Critical infrastructure, including the water treatment system, is now fully operational.
Furthermore, Heath Goldfields has paid over GHS 139 million toward inherited employee obligations. At the same time, all required environmental and operational permits have been secured.
Together, these steps reinforce confidence in the Bogoso-Prestea Mine restart strategy.
Environmental Responsibility and Regulatory Compliance
Environmental stewardship remains central to operations at Bogoso-Prestea Mine. Therefore, water management systems are closely monitored each day.
Similarly, tailings facilities are managed under strict safety standards. Oversight is provided by the Minerals Commission Ghana to ensure full compliance.
In alignment with global standards, the company follows responsible mining principles promoted by the World Gold Council. Consequently, the restart reflects both local accountability and international best practice.
Future Growth Plans for Bogoso-Prestea Mine
Looking ahead, Heath Goldfields is focused on sustainable expansion.
Currently, feasibility studies for the underground mine are advancing. Meanwhile, plans to rehabilitate the sulphide treatment plant are progressing. These projects will improve efficiency and increase long-term output.
As a result, the Bogoso-Prestea Mine is no longer defined by interruption. Instead, it is defined by structured recovery and forward planning.
Economic Impact of Bogoso-Prestea Mine
The revival of Bogoso-Prestea Mine supports Ghana’s economic growth.
For example, the project has generated employment and strengthened local supply chains. In addition, community partnerships continue to expand.
Most importantly, the restart demonstrates that disciplined leadership and regulatory alignment can restore investor confidence.
Ultimately, the Bogoso-Prestea Mine represents more than a return to production. It represents resilience, responsible mining, and shared prosperity for Ghana.
