Heath GoldFields | Restoring the Bogoso–Prestea Mine: A Journey of Renewal and Commitment
The revival of the Bogoso–Prestea Mine marks one of Ghana’s most significant undertakings in recent mining history—a story of resilience, responsibility, and renewal. Under the leadership of Patrick Appiah Mensah, Managing Director of Heath GoldFields Ltd, the company has embarked on a comprehensive plan to bring the mine back to full operation through disciplined investment, strong technical oversight, and a deep commitment to its workforce and host communities.
“This project is not just about restarting a mine,” says Mr. Mensah. “It’s about rebuilding livelihoods, restoring dignity, and proving that Ghanaian leadership can deliver mining operations that meet world-class standards.”
Since assuming operational control, Heath GoldFields has made tangible progress across every front of the restart programme. To date, the company has committed over GHS 100 million toward the payment of outstanding employee salaries, ensuring that workers and their families—many of whom were affected by past operational challenges—receive what they are rightfully owed.
In parallel, GHS 16.8 million has been paid to local contractors and service providers, reaffirming Heath GoldFields’ pledge to support indigenous businesses and ensure that the economic benefits of the mine circulate within the local economy. An additional GHS 34 million has been invested in safety and infrastructure upgrades, from shaft rehabilitation and power systems to underground water management and ventilation improvements—all essential steps before mining activities can safely resume.
Underground rehabilitation remains a major focus. With 6,800 cubic metres of water pumped daily, and capacity set to reach 10,000 cubic metres, the company is making consistent progress in stabilizing the underground environment and reopening critical access levels. Each milestone brings the mine closer to safe, sustainable production—carefully balancing speed with diligence to ensure long-term operational integrity.
However, this effort extends far beyond engineering and finance. Heath GoldFields recognizes that the revival of Bogoso–Prestea is as much a social and moral responsibility as it is a technical one. The company continues to engage openly with the Minerals Commission, local traditional authorities, district assemblies, and host communities to build a foundation of trust and mutual accountability.
Community outreach programmes are being designed to prioritize employment for local residents, enhance health and safety awareness, and create opportunities for skills development and training. Through these initiatives, Heath GoldFields aims to restore confidence in mining as a driver of sustainable growth rather than disruption.
“Every decision we take must honour the people who depend on this mine and the communities that surround it,” Mr. Mensah emphasized. “Our approach is deliberate—we are not rushing to produce ounces of gold; we are building a responsible, enduring operation.”
As the Bogoso–Prestea Mine moves closer to full restart, Heath GoldFields remains steadfast in its mission to demonstrate what responsible Ghanaian-led mining can achieve: operational excellence, environmental stewardship, and shared prosperity.
The company’s journey stands as a testament to its guiding principles—Safety, Integrity, and Sustainability—and its unwavering belief that mining, when done right, can transform both lives and landscapes.
